Sonny and the Sunsets – Hit After Hit

I rarely turn on the radio anymore, but San Francisco’s Sonny and the Sunsets definitely take me back to the 50’s and 60’s Oldies music I listened to growing up as a kid (despite the fact that I was born in the 80’s). That’s not to say they’re a retro act, just retro-inspired.  They manage to work within a framework of nostalgia, blending 50’s and 60’s pop, elements of rockabilly, folk and indie rock to produce their sun-drenched west-coast jangle pop sound. Frontman Sonny Smith definitely knows his way around a melody, and he’s been rather prolific recently, writing tune after tune for a variety of projects. He’s back with his main band, though, to follow up their debut Tomorrow is Alright with an album of new songs for us called Hit After Hit. This album comes out on Fat Possum April 12, 2011… just in time for summer. Have a listen to “I Wanna Do It” below:
